  • 800g kirby cucumbers, sliced

  • 1/2 yellow onion, sliced

  • 3 tablespoons salt

  • 2 cups distilled white vinegar

  • 2 cups white sugar

  • 1/4 cup water

  • 2 cloves garlic, sliced

  • 1 tablespoon mustard seed

  • 1 teaspoon celery seeds

  • 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric


Homemade Bread and butter pickles - they take their name from the great depression where they were a staple in people’s households .   1. Mix cucumbers, onion, and peppers in a bowl, pour over the salt and cover with cling film. Refrigerate, stirring occasionally, 2 to 4 hours.

  2. Mix the cucumbers thoroughly this will take a few minutes until salt has washed ogg.

  3. Mix vinegar, sugar, pepper, turmeric, water, garlic, mustard seed, celery seed, and ground cloves together in a saucepan , bring to a boil and cook for a few minutes stirring occasionally.

  4. Add cucumber mixture to brine; heat until almost boiling, remove from heat, and cool completely.

  5. Put in a sterilised jar in the fridge with mixture
